Apple low-cost iPhone launch may get delayed

After releasing iPhone SE four years back, rumours of Apple’s next “budget” smartphone, which may either be iPhone SE 2 or iPhone 9, are floating everywhere. Some reports have suggested that the Cupertino-based iPhone maker is considering launching low-cost iPhone SE successor on 31 March, 2020. Furthermore, several reports suggest that Apple has already begun the trial production. However, these rumours may be deemed baseless if a fresh report is believed to be true.

According to a new report from Nikkei, Apple will “likely miss its schedule” for mass production of the low-cost iPhone over the deadly coronavirus outbreak in China.

The report also stated that the mass production of the budget iPhone was supposed to start by the end of February, but multiple sources reveal that it could be delayed until sometime in March.

“The suppliers are doing their best to produce and ship the [cheaper] iPhone within four weeks. …The delay can’t be too long, otherwise it will affect the sales strategy of Apple’s new products in the second half of this year,” one of the people, who has direct knowledge of the matter, told Nikkei.

These follow a warning from the Cupertino-based tech giant that coronavirus outbreak will affect its business in the January-March quarter as global iPhone supply will be temporarily constrained.

Just days back, Apple announced that it has changed its quarterly guidance for the current quarter. In a notice to investors, the company said that though “work is starting to resume around the country (China),” things are slower than normal.

As a result, the Cupertino-based company said it does not expect to “meet the revenue guidance” provided for the March quarter in its earnings call on January 28, 2020. It also said that after the China virus outbreak, that it will be watching the situation in China closely.

Expected features and specifications of iPhone SE 2 or iPhone 9 have already surfaced via leaks and speculations. Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo has previously said he expects the device to come with the same A13 CPU as the iPhone 11, 3 GB of RAM, and 64GB or 128GB of storage.

Apart from that, certain iPhone SE 2 videos and photos (speculative) seems to showcase that the iPhone SE successor is expected to return with iPhone 8-like design with a single rear camera, thick bezels, and the Touch ID button. However, earlier leaks and reports also noticed that the 2020 model is slightly thicker than 2017 iPhone 8 model, as it boasts 7.8mm width instead of the 7.3mm. But the size of the new handset will remain the same – 4.7-inch with IPS LCD Retina display.

The features, looks and design of iPhone SE 2 may seem dated as they are already available in Apple’s older released models but the performance will be high-powered. The new low-cost model key selling point will be a next-gen A13 Bionic processor, the same as the iPhone 11. Moreover, the iPhone is expected to cost roughly around $399, (approximately 28,500).

iOS Copy-Paste Data Vulnerable to Snooping by Other Apps: Researchers

When it comes to data privacy and security, Apple has rarely shied away from taking credit for its encryption and security. Even in the tech industry, analysts have time to time lauded the company for its relatively secure operating system when compared to its immediate competitors. But now an alleged flaw in its ecosystem, exposed by two researchers, may allow personal data in Apple’s iPad and iPhone devices to be intercepted. According to Talal Haj Bakry and Tommy Mysk, when a user copies any miscellaneous data, it gets stored on Apple’s general pasteboard (commonly known as clipboard). This data temporarily stored to the device’s memory can be accessed by all apps, thereby, risks revealing private information such as a user’s GPS coordinates, passwords and banking details. “iOS and iPad operating system apps have unrestricted access to the system-wide general pasteboard,” the duo noted in a post published on Monday. They added saying, “A user may unwittingly expose their precise ...
