After Brexit, it’s Apple’s Lightning cable that will leave EU

Apple has been a strong influence in the tech world. The American company commands a major share in the global smartphone market. This positioning gives iPhones leverage to use a proprietary Lightining cable to charge and transfer data. The loyal user base and rich ecosystem has granted the brand this unique advantage. The European Union, however, has come down hard on Apple by passing a new legislation that will push the company to adopt a more universal USB Type C port.

The European Parliament voted with a majority of 582 to 40 in favour of a common charger for all mobile devices. The new guidelines have been ordered to be adopted by July this year. The motive behind pushing the legislation was to reduce e-waste in Europe.

This move could force Apple to ditch its long standing preference of a proprietary cable for its smartphones. The company argued against the move earlier by stating that the sudden change will result in massive one-time eco waste. The brand is also of the opinion that this move will restrict innovation and will create unnecessary disruption for the customers.

Apple gradually moved to USB Type C ports on MacBooks and iPad Pro but the company chose to stick with Lightning ports on iPhones. This new development will push it to adopt the same for its new iPhones. This move will also impact the extensive manufacturing ecosystem built around the unique charging port.

Apple will be launching the much anticipated iPhone 9 in less than two weeks. The new device is expected to be marketed as a budget offering. Given the new EU deadline, this may also be the last iPhone to sport a Lightning port, at least in Europe.

iOS Copy-Paste Data Vulnerable to Snooping by Other Apps: Researchers

When it comes to data privacy and security, Apple has rarely shied away from taking credit for its encryption and security. Even in the tech industry, analysts have time to time lauded the company for its relatively secure operating system when compared to its immediate competitors. But now an alleged flaw in its ecosystem, exposed by two researchers, may allow personal data in Apple’s iPad and iPhone devices to be intercepted. According to Talal Haj Bakry and Tommy Mysk, when a user copies any miscellaneous data, it gets stored on Apple’s general pasteboard (commonly known as clipboard). This data temporarily stored to the device’s memory can be accessed by all apps, thereby, risks revealing private information such as a user’s GPS coordinates, passwords and banking details. “iOS and iPad operating system apps have unrestricted access to the system-wide general pasteboard,” the duo noted in a post published on Monday. They added saying, “A user may unwittingly expose their precise ...
